First podcast I heard of you guys: very interesting listen.
Just a comment about the song Batdance: it feels to me like Prince just found out about sampling, got very excited and tried all possible tricks in one song. Much like a kid playing with a new toy. Indeed before this song I cannot recall much sampling going on in previous Prince songs...
About the album itself I would give it a 6 as well. I do still listen to The Future, Vicky Waiting and Scandalous. The rest of it has aged pretty badly.
Cheers!

Thanks for the info Blair! An interesting line up. I always liked the Margie Cox track 'Standing at the Altar', one of P's strong pop/rock tracks.

Cool podcast guys. I agree 'Scandalous' is the best song on the album. Especially love the creepy synth strings towards the end. Trouble with this album is that the bad stuff is just too boring. Great start, so-so middle, great end. Guess it's just an 'uneven' album. I tend to see this as a 'film album' more than a 'Prince album'. The film samples get in the way now.

Agree that the videos from this album are among his best. You've gotta get the Japanese 'The Scandaous Sex Suite' EP for the video mix of 'Partyman' alone! Surprised you didn't mention the b-side 'Sex' no-one ever seems to mention this track.

Overall, I feel Prince left the 80's with a bang commercially, but more of a pop musically. Score 6/10

Nice Podcast!

Batman was not about music, it was about $$$! A big sellout!

Unfortunately his genius never really came back since then.

Great review again fellas. I was (and am) a big Batman fan so I was doubly into this movie when I heard Prince was doing the soundtrack (was it really 20 years ago?!). At the time, it sounded quite 'plastic' compared to the complexity of Lovesexy and SOTT but it has grown on me somewhat over the years. I definitely agree about Scandalous - all time classic Prince track. Electric Chair is a real rocker too, pity the guitar wasn't more to the fore. I like the bleakness of The Future, fits in well with the way Prince weaved themes such as duality and dystopia into the album. Partyman, as you say, is a classioc funk/pop jam. He obviously sees it as a good song as he has played it over the years. Would have been a 8.5 or 9 out of 10 if Dance With the Devil, 200 Balloons and Feel U Up were on the album itself. MC...4 out of 10??! Just watched the SNL Electric Chair performance, very cool. Not sure who was in the band for that one..anyone know? Arms of Orion...ouch. I would put that in my all time 3 worst Prince tracks. Overall, I think that Batman did signal a change of direction as he seemed to move away form the more organic, complex sounds of the previous few years to a much more polished, electronic sound in the last 80s/early 90s and I think that Batman was the start of that in many respcts. How about a show focusing on bets unreleased tracks? Or best lesser known released tracks that don't get much coverage? Cheers fellas!

Another great show.

I'm a big fan of this album and all the b-sides and extended versions that came with it. The only weak song on it is Arms of Orion. I was ready for you to trash Lemon Crush but I love that song.

And you guys were so right about Scandalous. I've also always wished prince would have released Rave in 1989 as mentioned.

thanks for another great listen

Another great episode. It was nice to hear you guys tackle something from Prince's prime. I think the guitar solo in "Batdance" is/was highly praised because there are not a ton of examples of Prince playing like that on album. As far as a b-sides episode I am all for it but maybe it would make more sense to discuss the b-sides with the album that they came from, especially with the material from the '80s.

For what it's worth "The Arms Of Orion" is probably Prince's absolute worst song!

Have you guys considered getting your own forum somewhere? It would be great if there was somewhere we could post our thoughts on the episodes and hear your reactions.

nice one. I'm downloading this now, lookin forward 2 hearing the discussion. I've heard both Montreux gigs and they're really very very good.

lotusflow3r.com has uploaded 2 videos from Motreux. Both are really great! When I Lay My Hands on U in all it's prog-rock rearranged glory, and the long mellow rearrangement of Little Red Corvette with well-played bluesy guitar licks. Very very nice update to lotus.

The videos are well edited and sound great - no surprise, it's Montreux, they're always slick.

I'd love a blu-ray release of both gigs.

I am a really big Prince friend but I've alway loved seeing MJ perform on music award shows. Anytime they would say Mike is on tv I was watching it. Loved his videos. It's so sad and I can't he dies. He's gone too soon. But, going back to Prince there's no one quite like him and what Prince can do Michael couldn't. Same goes with Prince he couldn't do what Mike did. There awesome seperate individual musicians and dancers. To finish my babble Prince doesn't have to speak about Michael Jackson's death. Especially because of Prince's religion and Mike leaving that religion a long time ago it's best that he not get involved. I'm sure he's sadden by his death though and we don't know what's truly in Michael's heart. God does so we can't judge him for maybe some bad choices or the cause of his death. But I know this Mike's kids are with good family that wil guide them in life and help to raise them with love and spirituality.

You touched on one artistic mistake that Michael obviously made, and it was obvious even back in 1987: He tried to replicate the success and formula of Thriller.
It is something that Prince himself was able to avoid with Purple Rain.
Once you have such lavish success, you would be wise to go in a different direction. Stay fresh, evolve as an artist. Michael just tried to top Thriller. You can almost draw the dots from Thriller to Bad: rock crossover (check), duet (check), etc....
Prince, after Purple Rain, went far away from that record. Around the World in a Day showed him branching out. It is nowhere near as good a record as PR but it was a welcome change of pace. Quick and easy fans of the movie were confused and quickly left--check those used bins for evidence. The rest of stayed and were fired up with our favorite guy taking such chances. Prince remained fresh and kept branching out as an artist.
I always called it the "Tusk" move. After Fleetwood Mac's huge success with Rumours, they went away from the formula and stayed artistically interesting. Thriller was pretty much the end for me and Michael. He was chasing sales, fame, and numbers and his, considerable, talent suffered.

Oh My GOD!!! I missed Musicology and Prince show!! But I'm here now, LOL! you should do this more often. Wow, very cool podcast guys! One of The best we have so far. I have a great respect for Michael Jackson, and so do other Prince fans, this is a Prince site, but I think us Prince fans, have a great respect for Michael, even though we had a lot of rivalry and competition, i mean who hasn't put on Off The Wall 3 times a day and played the same record over and over again. ;)

I mean his music and his passion were, undeniable!

who hasn't twitched a bit to 'Don't Stop Til You Get Enough'?!!

And the Prince comments were great! - HA HA he really is white than 'black'. Crazy Prince, lied to me all those years, thinking that he was the exact color in Purple Rain, turns out not so! Oh well, he still wins his man points with me! ;)

Very controversial Prince, and very controvercial Michael. Both great, both crazy, both misunderstood, both appriciated. Wow, two sides of the conversation, facinating, as well interesting!

I will miss Michael, he was a wonderful man, who is next to Michael Jackson, NO ONE!

and thats true, us secret Prince/Michael fans agree ;)

AWESOME podcast (again!) - 5 Stars!

I really enjoy the podcasts more and more. Partly it is because I am getting to "know" you guys better and have some expectations (like you would from a favorite movie reviewer). I also enjoy how deeply you hear the tracks (headphones).
I was pleased with Musicology when it hit in 2004, but that was mostly due to the fact that it won Prince back to the mainstream. He was suddenly able to tour for big money in big arenas like, say, The Eagles. It was his victory lap and he deserved it. The music, though, was always a disappointment when compared to the adventurous tracks of the Rainbow Children/One Night Alone era. It was too safe. Prince himself made the point that Musicology was not any better than what he had been doing, it was just a "pop" album and that it why it was being so well received.
Though the title track made a good video and theme, I really only enjoy "If Eye Was the Man in Your Life" from this disc. That being said, it is a far more pleasing work that the very irritating "Rave". 3121 remains my favorite disc, by a country mile, of the trio from 2004-2007.
I hope you guys keep putting together excellent podcasts.

Actually, ICP&C live at Paislay Park probably isn't the right location - but I'm sure the live perfomance was from 2004.

Hi guys - another great podcast! I agree with your gerenal comments about this being a solid but not spectacular album. But in the context of teh 'comeback' in 2004 Musicology has a big part in recent Prince history. I like Dear Mr Man more than you all seemed to - love that slow funky groove and the lyrics are very strong. One quick point: ICP&C has been played live - I have heard a recording that I THINK was made at a gig at Paisley Park. The live version is much better than the studio version. Prince sings thru a vocoder distorter which actually works really well, and the beat just keeps on going and going in an almost hypnotic way into a jam. It is basically the same underlygin track but sounds very different. Also heard a live version of Call My Name, it is a really strong ballad with passionate vocals that recall NC2U. Only Prince could sing 'just can't stop writing songs about u...'! Never really noticed WDUWMTD - gonna take another listen to that. Must have passed me by for some reason. Anyway, great review again!
